Products & Materials

  • Tater Made products are made from premium solid white oak and black walnut. We chose these woods for their aesthetic but also their durability. We source our wood from sustainably grown forests in Ontario, Canada.

  • While Tater Made trays are not intended to be used with food, rest assured that they are finished with food safe products.

  • To clean, wipe with a warm, damp cloth and allow to completely dry before using again. Because our trays are made from solid wood, they cannot be cleaned in the dishwasher. If your tray begins to lose its luster, simply wipe on a small amount of food safe oil (olive oil, coconut oil, cutting board oil, etc) or a food safe wax (beeswax and oil blend). Let sit for approximately 2 minutes to soak in and wipe off excess. Allow to completely dry before use.

  • Given that our products are made from natural materials, there is always a chance that they may fade. Also, if our products are exposed to sunlight over an extended period of time, the UVs may also change. Our finishing products help to minimize fading, however it is not guaranteed to never fade. To further protect your Tater Made products, keep them out of direct sunlight and treat them to an oil rub once in a while. Please see above for care instructions.

  • We do offer custom sizes in the wood of your choice (subject to availability) at a premium price. These products require a non-refundable deposit and are not eligible for exchange or return. To initiate a custom piece, please email us at hello@tatermade.ca.

Sustainability

  • Our wood is sourced by a local FSC certified supplier in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada who ensures their wood comes from forests that are sustainably maintained.=

  • Aside from sourcing our wood from suppliers that practices sustainable foresting, the following are ways in which we aim to be as eco-friendly as possible.

    • Minimal waste practices. Cut offs are created during the manufacturing process. It's just the nature of making any wood product. The cut offs are then used to make more products.

    • When designing our products, we wanted them to be long lasting. That's why we chose to make our products from a natural product like wood. Wood lasts an awfully long time and even if you decide to throw your Tater Made product out, it won't just sit in a landfill. The wood will break down and return itself to the earth. Don't throw out your Tater Made products, donate or gift them when you're done with them.

    • Environmentally friendly packaging. When sourcing our packaging, we wanted to ensure that our packaging was made from as much recycled material as possible, biodegradable and/or recyclable.

  • We wrap each tray in recycled paper wrap and pack them in compostable mailer envelopes. We then affix a vinyl Tater Made sticker and shipping label on the envelope. To ensure the packaging is properly disposed of, you must remove all the stickers and labels from the envelope.

Payments

  • Each product starts off as a slab of wood. Using proprietary tools to ensure accurate sizing, the shape of the tray is marked on the slab. Each piece is cut individually using a combination of tools. After the trays have taken shape, they're sanded smooth and a finish is applied by hand to each tray individually. Each product is proudly made in Canada.

  • Tater Made products are generally more expensive than products available through big box stores and franchises for a number of reasons:

    1. Our products are designed, handmade and hand finished by one person, one tray at a time. Big box products are mass produced by big manufacturing machines, hundreds of items at a time.

    2. Our products are made from real  Canadian-grown solid wood. And, while we have a supplier, we're purchasing our woods in small batches. Big box products are usually made of recyclable or non-recycled plastic and low quality wood. They also have the advantage of being able to purchase their materials in bulk, which helps to keep retail prices cheap.

    3. Each Tater Made products take time and skill to produce. Meanwhile, the big box stores products are manufactured quickly and easily, usually with the push of a button or leveraging the skills of dozens to hundreds of workers, sometimes inequitably.

  • You can choose to send a Tater Made product as a gift, just enter their name and address in the shipping field and we’ll send it directly to them. We do not, however, offer gift wrapping or custom cards/notes.

  • Tater Made is small-batch, solid wood products handcrafted by a person, one person. The same person who runs this business also made the products on this site. And that person is a Canadian, small-business owner who cares enough about the environment for it to impact how they do business. Whether or not that makes Tater Made different is up to you.

Miscellaneous
